Blog Tips: how to sync your google calendar with Mozilla Sunbird so you can access it offline

Here are the instructions to set up Mozilla Sunbird so that you can access it offline and have your offline calendar entries update to Google calendar when you get back online.  If you have any problems check the more detailed post here.

All the files they refer to can be found in the BIN directory where you install the program.

1) Install GCALDaemon (Java 1.5 required) (don't install it in program files or the firewall will block it)

2) Start password encoder ('password-encoder.bat' or 'password-encoder.sh'). Input your Gmail password and press ENTER. Copy the encoded password.
4) Edit the 'gcal-daemon.cfg' file with your text editor.

A) Set the 'file.enabled' property to 'true'
B) Set the 'file.google.username' property to your Gmail address
C) Set the 'file.google.password' property to your encoded password
D) Set the 'file.private.ical.url' property to iCal URL, without protocol and hostname (see image)
5) The most important: Set the 'file.offline.enabled' property to 'true'!

6) Start GCALDaemon ('standalone-start.bat' or 'standalone-start.sh').
7) Launch Sunbird. Click the 'New Calendar...' menu on the Calendars page.
8) Select 'On the Network' option on 'Create New Calendar' dialog.
9) Select 'iCalendar' format, and put the local iCal file's path into the 'Location' field. Important: use the 'file:///' prefix before the file's path, and don't include backslash characters! Use standard file URL format (replace spaces to '%20', etc).
10) Input the new calendar's name (e.g. 'Google Calendar'). Click 'Next' then 'Finish'.
11) Items added (or modified/deleted) to your Sunbird calendar will now automatically appear in your Google Calendar. GCALDaemon compares your Google Calendar (if available) and local iCalendar file every 10 minutes, and does all modifications together. If it is unable to do so because the network is unavailable, it tries again when it detects network presence.
12) To set up multiple file listeners, you need to configure a path-username-password-url set for each of the Google Calendars you want to synchronize (see picture below; the first listener definition is unindexed, the others are indexed from '2'). Note: don't include backslash characters in the 'file.ical.path' properties.
1) Install GCALDaemon (Java 1.5 required).

2) Start Config Editor ('config-editor.bat' or 'config-editor.sh'). Select the second tab and disable the HTTP-based synchronizer. Select the third tab and enable the file-based synchronizer. Enable the 'dial-up connection' mode (second checkbox on this page), then click on the 'Google Accounts' button.
3) If required, you can register a new Google Account: Click on 'New Account', type in your Gmail address and password (twice), then click on 'Verify' button.
4) After the verification, click on the 'OK' button.
5) Click on the 'New' button.
6) Select/browse the appropriate Google Calendar and iCalendar file. Click on 'Copy to Clipboard' then click 'OK'. Save the changes (File/Save).
7) Launch Sunbird. Click the 'New Calendar...' menu on the Calendars page.
8) Select 'On the Network' option on 'Create New Calendar' dialog.
9) Select 'iCalendar' format, and paste [CTRL+V] the copied iCal file URL for your calendar's Private Address into 'Location' field.

Blog Tips: How to change the size of a displayed image with the HTML code

Size Attributes

The size attributes define the width and height of the image. They look like this:

<img src="image.jpg" width="200" height="150">

Insert the URL of the image you want displayed and paste it in, then just change the numbers 200 and 150 to whatever you want the height and width to be. It's not rocket science!

Blog Tips: How to include an RSS Feed box in your blog

Here are a couple of RSS feedbox widget creators that you can try. If you want to create an RSS feed from any web page use Page2RSS.

Feedwind
This one. This is the one that I've used on the blogs page on this site. It's really very helpful and has a few options deciding on how long the title and preview of the contents are. And it's free! Great.

RSSinclude.com
Or You can design the Feed box here. althought this one you have a limit of creating 10 boxes then you have to pay.

How to Include an RSS Feed in Blogs at Blogger.com / Blogspot.com

RSSinclude.com makes it very easy to include RSS feeds in your blog. Basically there are two areas on blogs where you can add an RSS box:

1) in the sidebar on the right side (containing the Blog Archive, About me and Followers...)
or
2) in blog posts.

We would like to explain both in the following sections.

1) RSSbox in the Sidebar of the Blog

This area of your blog is visible permanently. You can add a blog archive, your personal bio and much more to this area. Of course you can put an RSSbox from RSSinclude.com here. This is how:
a) Log in to your account at blogger.com. On top of the page there is a main menu. Click the "Layout" link, this will lead you to a graphical overview of your blog.
b) Click the "Add a Gadget" link. A new window will be opened displaying different gadgets from which you can choose. Select "HTML/JavaScript" to add third-party code like ours.
c) A form will appear which contains two form fields: title and content. You can type in a title for the gadget, e.g. "Latest RSS News".
d) The content of the gadget comes from RSSinclude.com. You should keep rssinclude.com opened in a new window simultaneously. In order to get your IncludeCode you have to create a new RSSbox first. As soon as you are done you will get an IncludeCode by clicking on "Include!".
e) Copy the IncludeCode of your RSSbox and paste it into the form at blogger.com (see screenshot).
f) Click the "Save" button to return to your blog administration.
g) You can click the "Preview" button to preview your changes or save the change layout by clicking the "Save" button.
h) Click the "View Blog" link (next to the "Monetize" tab) in the blogger administration. Subsequently your blog will be displayed containing a brand new RSSbox. You can still change the styling of the RSSbox at My RSSboxes. If you play around a bit you will be able to embed it very nicely.

2) RSSbox in a Blog Post

The second way of including an RSS feed in your blog is to embed it into a blog post. The following steps and screenshots show you how to do that:

a) Go to your blog administration at blogger.com. Click the "Posting" tab on top of the page. Edit the post in which you want the RSS feed to be displayed - or simply create a new post.
b) Click the "Edit Html" link on top of the rich-text editor. Subsequently the html code of you post will be displayed.
c) Open rssinclude.com simultaneously in a new window. Click the "Create a Box" link. Create and style your RSSbox as you wish. Keep in mind that its dimensions should fit into your blog post. As soon as you are done go to the "Include!" tab (see screenshot).
d) Copy and paste the JavaScript-code from rssinclude.com into the html of your blog post. Ensure that you paste the code in a spare line of the editor (see screenshot).

e) Click the "Publish Post" link. Blogger.com should now say "Your  blog post published successfully!". Click the "View Blog" link to display your changes.

f) This is how your blog post could look like. You can still change the styling of the RSSbox by surfing to My RSSboxes at rssinclude.com.

Blog Tips: How to insert a drop down menu into blogger

Here's the menu that i'm using on this page. It's not ideal, but it works.

To customise the look of the menu go here.
To choose the colours for the menu items use these codes.
Then follow these instructions.

You can watch the video for how to do it here.

Alternatively you can try another method entirely here.

This is the one I'm trying on this site.

Tried this one, but couldn't get the colours to work. This is the menu builder for this one.

Blog Tip: How to display HTML code in a post

Just go here and the program will convert your html text into text that displays in your blog post.

Blog Tips: How to publish a podcast for free

This post was taken directly from this website. Go there to see the full post.

------------

I recently moved my podcast from Libsyn's pay service to the free hosting on Archive.org, the Internet Archive and home of the wayback machine. If you're willing to allow a licensing model compatible with their upload system, this might work for you. Libsyn is a great and simple solution, but the monthly payments have added up and the free solution is pretty easy using Feedburner and Wordpress.com to create an iTunes compatible feed.

Step 1: Create your podcast audio file

Audacity in BNI-Ubuntu

Record your podcast in a standard audio format. Mp3 is pretty common and universal. If you need a free audio recording and edition program, I suggest Audacity. That's what I use. It's free and open source.

Step 2: Upload to the Internet Archive

On Archive.org, click on the SHARE button. If you don't have an account, you'll be prompted to create one. You can even login with your usual OpenID if you have one. If you've already created your Wordpress.com account (which you will need to do in Step 3), you can use your Wordpress.com URL as your OpenID/Login.
Archiveupload

With the SHARE button, your browser will prompt you to select the file or files. On the new page, you'll be able to see the status of your upload. In the Title field, put the short name of your podcast. Archive.org will generate an identifier with this name that you can use to add more episodes of your podcast as your create them. Although you really don't need to keep all of your podcasts under the same identifier and can upload anywhere, the site has what it calls Collections and it simplifies things to keep all of your episodes under the same collection. The description and keyword fields should be about the general podcast and not episode specific. Choose a license if you want. Finally, click Share My File(s).

It will take a minute or so for the site to create your page. Save the url that it generates as this is where you'll be updating your podcast from now on. Under "Audio Files", you'll see the file name of your episode. Right click (Windows) or Command click (Mac) on the listand copy the link URL to your audio file to your clipboard.

Step 3: Create your Wordpress.com Site

In this example, I'm using a free Wordpress.com blog. You can substitute the blogging site and software of your choice as long as it will generate an rss feed.

wppodcast

Follow the directions on the site to sign up. It's pretty straightforward. Create a new blog post. Put the episode title as your post title. Add any description or show notes or links about the episode as needed in the body. At the very end, paste your url to the mp3 and make the url link to the mp3. Publish the post to the web.

Step 3: Create your podcast RSS feed

This is the part that turns your blog and mp3 file into a real published and subscribe ready podcast. By default, Wordpress.com will put a link to your RSS feed on your blog's page. Copy that url. Google's Feedburner service makes this part pretty easy. Log into your Google account or create a Feedburner account and past the URL in the field marked Burn a Feed right this instant. Check the box that says I'm a podcaster. Hit next. You'll have to title and create a short url for your feed. Continue through the options hitting next and filling out all of the fields until Feedburner says "You have successfully updated the Feed".

Step 4: Submit your podcast to iTunes

itunespodcastsubmit

Most of my listeners come from iTunes, so this step is pretty important. Follow this link to Submit Podcasts to the iTunes Directory. This will open iTunes. Copy your feed URL from Feedburner, paste it into the iTunes' Podcast Feed URL box, hit continue until your submission is complete. It could take up to a few days for your podcast to appear in the iTunes Podcast directory.

That's it, you now have now have a podcast!

Blog Tip: How to get mp3s to play directly from the blog

Just paste this little piece of code anywhere in the post and a little play button will appear in your blog post next to where you place the link to the mp3.

Sons & Daughters - Your Glory
 <script src="http://googlepage.googlepages.com/player.js" type="text/javascript">
</script>

Or You can try this one.

<script language="JavaScript" src="http://www.archive.org/download/audio-player.js_159/audio-player.js">
</script>
<object data="http://www.archive.org/download/player.swf_43/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.archive.org/download/player.swf_43/player.swf">
<param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=audioplayer1&soundFile=http://www.zackmoody.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Your-Glory.mp3">
<param name="quality" value="high">
<param name="menu" value="false">
<param name="wmode" value="transparent">
</object>

Just replace the text in bold with the URL to the mp3 you want to play.

Here is the tuturial for the 2nd player.

Here is a link to another 10 players that you can try.

Blog Tips: How to link Pages Tabs to other pages instead of static pages

This post is taken directly from this website.

An easy way to add navigation tabs in Blogger is using a Pages gadget. However, as the name implies, there is a shortcoming -the tabs only link to static pages.
Does that mean you should forget about adding tabs linking pages other than static pages? No, definitely not….because there is always a workaround.
Use the hack below to add tabs that link to any URLs. You can add tabs linking to label pages,  individual post pages, website or whatever.
Here’s how:
  1. Go to Dashboard > Design > Edit HTML.
  2. Tick the Expand Widget Templates check box on top right of the HTML window.
  3. Look for Pages gadget code, like this:
    01<b:widget id='PageList1' locked='false' title='Pages' type='PageList'>
    02<b:includable id='main'>
    03  <b:if cond='data:title'><h2><data:title/>h2>b:if>
    04  <div class='widget-content'>
    05    <ul>
    06      <b:loop values='data:links' var='link'>
    07        <b:if cond='data:link.isCurrentPage'>
    08          <li class='selected'><a expr:href='data:link.href'><data:link.title/>a>li>
    09        <b:else/>
    10          <li><a expr:href='data:link.href'><data:link.title/>a>li>
    11        b:if>
    12      b:loop>
    13     PUT THE CODE FOR THE LINKS HERE
    14    ul>
    15    <b:include name='quickedit'/>
    16  div>
    17b:includable>
    18b:widget>
  4. Put the code for the  additional links right after as indicated in line 13.
    Each link shall be in this format:
    <li><a href="YourLink">YourLinkTexta>li>
    where YourLink is an URL and YourLinkText is the text you would like to appear on the tab.
    To make the link open in a new window or tab, add target="_blank" attribute right after href="YourLink".
  5. Preview before saving.
  6. Enjoy!
